Requirements:

Trainees will be required to possess numeracy and literacy skills to be able to understand and interpret an Asthma Action Plan, Asthma Risk Minimisation Plan and document workplace reporting procedures.

Special Needs:

Trainees with special needs, either physical difficulties or literacy difficulties, should inform the trainer so that assistance can be arranged to meet their needs.

Description:

This course will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to be able to interpret an asthma management plan and provide asthma related first aid interventions in the workplace.

Course Outcome:

This course will provide trainees with the knowledge and skills to be able to provide first aid in the work place in relation to asthma. It provides background knowledge of the causes, symptoms and the effects of asthma as well as emergency treatment and risk minimisation.

Modules to cover:

  •  Anatomy & physiology of the upper and lower airways
  •  Understanding asthma and its causes
  •  Triggers of an asthma attack
  •  Signs and symptoms of Asthma
  •  Chain of survival including how to send for help
  •  First aid principles and procedures to be established whilst treating an patient suffering an asthma attack
  •  4 x 4 x 4 Action Plan
  •  Common Asthma medications:  Reliever, Preventer and Controller medications
  •  Delivery devices used by patients
  •  How to use and maintain puffers and inhalers
  •  Interpretation of Asthma Action Plans
  •  Interpretation of Asthma Risk Minimisation Plan
  •  Documentation required for recording asthma emergencies
